Social Media Down – How One Platform Can Impact A Business

LinkedIn Down - How one social media can impact a business - Website

For many organisations social media has rapidly developed into one of the most important areas of their business, in some cases even replacing the need for a website. The opportunities for business growth are not only huge but can be extremely cost effective, with organic growth often resulting in enormous exposure for companies who have cracked the formula. You only have to Google the word ‘influencer’ to see the huge exposure and profit created for businesses by platforms such as Instagram.

What happens though when an algorithm change takes place, or when a social media network decides to stop working? On the 14th January whilst posting on social media LinkedIn appeared to stop allowing us to post, I tried Hootsuite which didn’t work, logged in and out which also didn’t appear to work. So, I did what many social media users would do and headed to Twitter to search #LinkedIndown. There it was, a list of fellow users all trying to figure out what was going on.  I did a quick google search and there were plenty of websites confirming the same. On heading back over to Twitter I noticed there seemed to be a huge amount of recruitment companies commenting in a panic that one of their main resources seemed to have stopped functioning correctly. It really made me think how much businesses can rely on one platform of social media. It’s understandable, if you find a formula that works why wouldn’t you continue to use it?

Although this was an extremely small ‘blip’ in how this brilliant platform functioned, it highlights the importance of ensuring that we diversify the ways in which we market our business. Its simply not enough to grow a big following on one platform and not have an eye on how the next could help.

What Can We Do?

The list of social media platforms that a business should now be listed on seems to grow daily, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, YouTube and now TikTok are only a few.
